Q:Does my travel insurance cover against hurricanes?

A:

If there’s a hurricane in the place you’re going to
As long as you take out travel insurance before the hurricane, you’ll be covered for delays getting to or from your intended destination if there’s a hurricane there.

Provided you've started your trip you will also be covered for travel and accommodation costs involved in moving to new accommodation, if the place you’ve already booked and paid for is caught up in the hurricane.

You can’t claim if the hurricane had already started before you booked your trip, or before you took out your insurance.

If there’s a hurricane while you’re there
If the hurricane’s so bad that you can’t continue your trip at all, we’ll cover the cost of bringing you back to the UK. You’re also insured for injuries, or even death, caused by a hurricane.

If you wanted to claim for personal belongings, or for costs to do with missing a journey that hadn’t been cancelled, we’d look at that on a case by case basis.

Here’s some more detail about missed departure claims.

If a hurricane in the UK damages your home
If you live in the UK and your home is in a hurricane a week or less before you’re due to travel, you would be covered by the policy. That’s as long as you needed to stay behind to sort out the damage.

If a hurricane in the UK affects your plane, train or ferry terminal
If there’s a hurricane at a UK airport, ferry terminal or railway station that you’re booked to leave from, you are covered.

Your cover limits and our terms and conditions can be found in your policy book. It’s also got details about the amounts you’d have to pay towards any claim.
